Peter Harris’s mental illness was making it difficult for him to find employment, but Worktrainers Seymour helped him find a job that centred on his valuable life experience.

Peter transferred from another employment service in 2014, unsatisfied with their outcomes.

He worked with the Disability Employment Services team at Worktrainers in Seymour, who helped him get placement at a Wallan business.

“I’ve got a mental illness and that flared up so we pulled the pin on that job – but Worktrainers didn’t give up on me, they kept looking,” Peter said.

In the meantime, Peter took part in the Futures Program, which made him realise he had a passion for working in the health services industry.

Before the program finished, a position became available at GV Area Mental Health – one for an advocate with lived experience.

With help from Worktrainers, Peter put together a resume and cover letter, and his hard work paid off – he began his new position as a GV Area Mental Health support worker in July 2015.

“It’s tracking along nicely – I support people through their mental illness, which is something I’m really passionate about,” he said.

Peter praised Worktrainers for their help in gaining employment.

“They’ve been fantastic – they’ve been really good with me and their support is amazing,” he said.
